Why is Comprehension Important?

Strong comprehension is the key to both reading enjoyment and success in school. Readers with strong comprehension are able to identify with characters, follow story development, recognize main events, and predict outcomes. They enter into the world of a book, creating mental pictures of the story and imaginatively participating in the characters' adventures.

How Does This Program Build Comprehension?

Students in this program build strong comprehension in two ways. First, they read and discuss excellent works of children's literature. Through these discussions, students learn to explore story elements such as character, setting, plot, and story structure, and to identify main events. Second, students in this program develop a high level of reading fluency. As a result, your son or daughter will enter third grade with stronger reading comprehension and greater interest in books and reading.
